Dr. Barry Howson

Vice President of Academics

Degrees

Theology & Church History, Barry graduated with a Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Seminary, Toronto in 1984, and in 2000 with his PhD in Church History at McGill University. He has been a professor at Heritage since 2001, primarily teaching in the areas of theology, NT Bible, worldviews/apologetics and Church history. Since 1980 he has been involved in the local church as a youth pastor and lead pastor, as well as an interim pastor, helping churches in transition. He currently offers regular pulpit supply for churches. He is married to Sharon, and has two daughters, Natalie and Shawna.

Dr. Steve West

Professor of Theological Studies and Academic Advisor

Degrees

For many years, Dr. Steve West has faithfully taught and mentored students at Heritage, teaching courses in theology, philosophy, ethics, and apologetics. In addition, West has had an international ministry, preaching, lecturing, and teaching courses in multiple countries on five continents around the world. West has also served his entire adult life as a pastor in the local church and is currently the pastor of Madoc Baptist Church in Madoc, Ontario.

Dr. Joel Barker

Professor of Biblical Studies

Degrees

Joel graduated with a PhD in Christian Theology from McMaster Divinity College in 2011, focusing on the Old Testament and Hebrew. He has been a professor at Heritage since 2011, teaching primarily in the areas of Biblical Studies, hermeneutics, and the ancient context of Scripture. Joel is the author of several articles exploring the rhetorical style and strategy of Old Testament prophets. He is the author of the Joel Volume in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the Old Testament Series and co-authored the Numbers Volume of the Kerux Series published by Kregal with Dr. Steve West. He is married to Karen, and has three children, Abigail, Hannah, and Isaac.

Jeemin Moon

Director of Biblical Care and Counselling Studies

Degrees

A native of South Korea, Jeemin Moon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Counselling Psychology, a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Divinity in Worship Leadership, and a Master of Theology in Biblical Counselling. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical Counselling and Practical Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Jeemin’s research interest is applying biblical theology and theological anthropology to people’s psychosomatic struggles. He is a an Advanced Certified Biblical Counsellor and Level 2 Supervisor through the Association of Biblical Counselors. His counselling experience spans various settings, including schools, local churches, the military, psychiatric rehabilitation centres, and private practice. He speaks on different venues and writes for the Biblical Counselling Coalition (BCC) and the Canadian Biblical Counselling Coalition (CBCC).

Jeemin serves as the Music Ministry Director at Grace Bible Church in Cambridge. He strives to live a life rooted in the Word of God – teaching and admonishing fellow believers, and singing to the Lord with thankfulness (Col. 3:16). In his free time, he loves to play the guitar, taking walks, and savouring a good cup of coffee or tea.

Dr. Douglas A. Thomson

Director of Music and Worship Studies

Degrees

Doug holds a B.A. in music from The University of Western Ontario, a Masters Degree in Theology from Tyndale University College and a Masters Degree in Music (choral conducting) from the University of Hartford, eventually studying briefly with the world renowned Maestro Robert Shaw at Furman University in South Carolina. He also has an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from Western Ontario Conservatory of Music, and a Licentiate Diploma in piano performance from Trinity College, England and a doctorate in worship studies from the Webber Institute for Worship Studies in Florida.

Dr. Thomson has many years of experience serving as the worship pastor at various churches as well as performing with such artists as Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, David Phelps, Ben Heppner, Brian Doerksen, Robin Mark and others. In the fall of 2018 he was asked to take a group of students and music alumni from Heritage to Carnegie Hall in New York City for a concert. In addition to teaching and performing, he remains active as an adjudicator, clinician, worship consultant and conference speaker.

Dr. Marianne Vanderboom

Director of BRE Professional, Dean of the College

Degrees

After teaching for 10 years in Christian elementary schools, Marianne returned to studies and graduated from Heritage with a Bachelor of Religious Studies in 2004 and a Master of Divinity – Research in 2008. She completed her Doctorate of Ministry at Acadia Divinity College in 2024. She was part of the adjunct faculty at Heritage from 2005-2009, and returned to the school in 2011, overseeing programs and teaching in areas of church ministry. She is an active member at Stoney Creek Baptist Church in London, and serves in a parachurch ministry to at-risk youth and women who are coming out of abusive backgrounds, using horses to help bring healing. When she is not working, she loves spending time walking her dog, reading, and working in the garden.

Dr. Franklin VanderMeulen

Director of Intercultural Studies

Degrees

Franklin & Eleanor served nineteen years with Ethnos Canada: two in Panama and then in administration and leadership in the Canadian office. In 2011 they ventured out by faith again and moved to Cambridge where Frank studied full time at Heritage. After graduating with a Master of Divinity in 2014, he was invited to join the faculty to teach missions and intercultural studies. In 2023 Frank graduated from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS, Chicago) with a Doctor of Ministry degree.

Frank’s heart for ministry at Heritage is four-fold: 1) To help all students catch the vision for how their life and ministry fits in with the Lord’s eternal and global mission; 2) To equip students in the Intercultural Studies program for cross-cultural gospel ministry; 3) To encourage all students in their personal relationship with the Lord; 4) To enable Heritage to bless the many Canadian churches and mission agencies with whom we labour together in God’s mission.

Frank has been happily married to Eleanor since 1991 (which is when they married!) and they have three married children and a short list of grandchildren. Their favourite family memories are of camping and cross-country road trips.

Chuck Schoenmaker

Vice President of Student Formation & External Ministry Relations

Degrees

Chuck Schoenmaker has a passion for mentoring and guiding others in their faith. In the 1990s, he served as a Youth Pastor at Metropolitan Bible Church in Ottawa, where he encouraged spiritual growth among young people. In the early 2000s, Chuck became the principal of Redeemer Christian High School in Ottawa. Here, he taught and led the school with a vision for academic excellence rooted in Christian values. He desired to help foster an environment where students succeeded academically and spiritually.

Since 2015, Chuck has been a professor at Heritage College, where he has taught courses on Christian leadership, education, and critical thinking. He desires to disciple students and inspire future leaders for the church and the workforce.
